Another Lady E

Well, I have joined the ranks of Lady Eleanor knitters and am about 35% of the way through. I love the pattern - very rhythmic and calming, and easy to remember (except for the side triangles at least). My only complaint is with the yarn - I'm using Noro Silk Garden (colorway 246) , and while the colors are gorgeous the yarn is unevenly spun. Some parts are over spun and some aren't spun at all. This sort of thing doesn't normally bother me a whole lot, but considering that there are a lot of seams where stitches are picked up, it's a bit annoying, as some spots look wonky. But, overall I like what I've got so far. I have a few pictures of progress posted on flickr if anyone is interested.

I also completed a version of Braided Mischief over the summer. It was intended as a Christmas gift, and the recipient just loves it. :) I worked that up in two balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, which gave the scarf a lovely texture and softness.

Backyard Leaves Success!

Seeing the photos of completed scarves inspired me to stick with the pattern, and I finally managed to write out the directions for the main part of the scarf and I am loving making it! I'll write out the rest soon, since it works up so quickly! Maybe the "next" time I try a chart I'll do it with a lot of colored markers around me. Thanks for all of the help, and Happy New Year! Finished Shetland Triangle

I finished my Shetland Triangle. I'm happy with how it turned out. I used Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in color #10 on size 8 needles. It took 10 days to knit. I used straight needles until the 9th repeat of the body section because I'm not that fond of my circular needles and I added an extra (for 9 total) body repeat. I skipped the last (purl) row of the edging chart and the last pattern row because I didn't want the points along the edge. It's about 64 inches wide along the top edge and 26 inches from top edge to bottom point. I have a little longer write up and another photo on my blog.

Having a hard time with the chart

I'm new to the blog - writing in in desperation! I have tried reading the chart and am completely boggled by reading a chart - I guess I should have started with a smaller chart, but I am converting the chart to text. And am having an incredibly difficult time reading the chart to even to that. I am wondering if anyone on the blog has already converted the chart to text and is willing to share - it isn't giving me the pattern, I already have that (copyright and all of that!) but I just can't follow this chart. I've spent hours trying to set the pattern up and am terribly frustrated! Thanks if you can help. Marcie

Ene's Scarf - CHART 3 Problems

Thanks for your help in my last post. I have another question...it's about Chart 3.

Let's see if I can explain my problem.....

Where I am:
Chart 3
Row 33 (starting from the right side)
I'm working from a photo-copy b/c I didn't think to bring my book with me on Christmas break, so I can't see if there are colors on the chart (for repeat sections, etc...)

What I did & What My Problem Is:
--> I took care of the first 8 stitches - no problem.
--> I knit the next block of stitches (up to the "center st"). (The base row of the pyramid.)
--> Now here's the problem. I'm not at the "center st" yet. I have 115 sts left before the center st (114 if you count the stitch I'm going to use for the double decrease for the center stitch).

Counting the chart, the base of the pyramid consumes 33 stitches. So, if I all need to do is repeat the bast over and over again until I hit the center stitch, then I still have a problem, because I'll only be able to finish 3 and a half repeats of the pyramid base before hitting that middle stitch.

Is that okay? I imagine I will need to gradually decrease, but I'm not sure if this is correct.

Thanks in advance for your help (again)....ooh...and...MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Backyard Leaves for Carey

Hi! I made a Backyard Leaves scarf for my sister for Christmas. I made it out of Alpaca with a Twist, 100% alpaca. It is nice and soft, and I was pleased that it turned out so nicely, especially after blocking.

My only "complaint" is that the chart set up row never actually says it is a wrong side row, you have to use your detective skills to figure it out. I banged my head against a wall a few times until I figured that out. After that, it was a pretty straightforward knit, challenging enough to keep me entertained but not so much I would forget where I was.

This was the first time I had knit from a chart, and I was happy with the results. More photos on my blog.

Shetland Triangle

I finally finished my Shetland triangle. Its currently blocking , but it looks beautiful. This was my first attempt at lace work, and I must say that I may try my hand at other lace knits. There are more pictures on my blog.

Ene Knitters

Hello one and all! Happy Holidays!

I have a question for those of you who have knit the lovely Ene.
What yarn did you use, do you recommend any certain yarn that would create the greatest Ene ever? I ask this question because for Christmas my wonderful husband and I will be going on vacation and during our vacation we will be on a yarn crawl the entire time (sounds heavenly, doesn't it?!) and Ene is one of the projects for which I would like to purchase yarn. I, of course, have the Blackberry Ridge as recommended in the book as a possibility, but have no idea if I will run across it during our travels. And, truthfully, I would be tickled if some of you had used a yarn that was a bit heavier and loved it (lace wt yarn and I are trying to have a better relationship; this is, afterall, one of my 2007 resolutions, but, if I were to choose our [lace wt and I] relationship builder, it would be something smaller, such as a scarf), but if lace wt it is to be for the perfect Ene, so be it.

Any and all of your suggestions and recommendations are highly appreciated!

Happy Holidays and Knitting!

Vintage Velvet gone Chunky Wool-Ease

I love this pattern, Vintage Velvet, so much that I had to do it for my son in charcoal, in Chunky Wool-Ease, he's a big guy and he requested it for Christmas. The hat it from "Hip Knit Hats," another great pattern book. I had to make the scarf 4 cables longer due to the bulkiness of the yarn and my son being the big guy he is. It really came out nice and would be great in a cashmerino....Later, Terri Lynn

Ene's Scarf - NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!!

Hey guys..I'm starting my first lace project (besides Branching Out)...and I spent hours last night casting on all 375 stitches (wow!).

It's also my first real exposure to using a chart.

Now I'm stuck...scary, huh?

TWO QUESTIONS:

1. The grey areas of the chart are indicated as "no stich". What do I do with this? Do I just ignore the square and move on to the next one where there is actually a stitch direction?

2. What direction to I read the chart?
Do I:

---> Start with Chart 1 Right Half on the right side of the chart (line 1)...go to the end...then start of on the right side of line 1 on Chart 1 Left Half?

---> Then for the next row, do the same thing, except this time start with "Chart 1 Left Half" and move from left to right, ending with the "Chart 1 Right Half" (instead of right to left)?

Hope someone can help! I'm anxious to start!!

Thanks in advance!!

Campus Scarf

I have not seen many Campus Scarfs, but it's a very nice pattern, particularly without stripes. Here is my version of it:
I used 3 1/2 balls of Schewe Filo Superwash in colouway 1, for a length of 1m70. This will be a Christmas gift for my father in law.
Joyeuses Fêtes à tous :-)

Capelet all done and fun!

Hey all! I am new to the group. I have had Scarfstyle for awhile now but never made anything from it. A couple of weeks I picked it up and haven't put it down since. So far I have finished the Blue Capelet and have both the turtleneck shrug and a Misty garden scarf on the needles. I love looking at everyone else's projects and can just tell that it is only a matter of time before I cast on for one of the lovely Lady Eleanors. For more details check out my blog

started a Shetland Triangle

I'm to the neck part of my Wandering Aran Fields cape. The cable chart part seemed to go along pretty quickly but the neck is getting a little dull. I'm about 6 inches along and have set it aside to do the Shetland Triangle shawl. I'm hoping to get the Shetland Triangle done for a Christmas present then I'll finish up my cape.
Here is my progress so far. This will be my first lace shawl. It's not much to look at yet. I'm on my fourth repeat of the body chart and the rows are getting long. I'm about to switch to circular needles. I've been using my straight needles for as long as I can with it because I'm not crazy about my circulars. I usually spend more time wrestling with the stiff cable than knitting. I'm hoping Santa brings me a set of the new KnitPick optons needles for Christmas.

Newbie

Thank you very much for accepting my application for this knitalong. My alias is Jinx, my real name is Anne, and I live in Hamburg, Germany (that means that English is not my mother's tongue, sorry for all the mistakes I will make...). Scarf Style was one of the first books about knitting I bought and I was stunned by the multitude of possibilities displayed in this book to knit something simple as a scarf. I decided to knit at least six (if not more) of the patterns, and I completed three of them by now. For unterstanding this enthusiasm one has to know that German books and magazines about knitting suggest to the interested reader that knitting must be the most boring thing in the world. When I started to knit again appr. nine months ago I decided quickly to get my inspiration from English publications which are far more interesting.
The first scarf I did from our highly cherished book was the "Interlocking Balloon" pattern which I chose when my mother asked for a scarf as a christmas present. This decision made me sort of a daredevil, since I am not a very experienced knitter so far. And the pattern gave me a really hard time at the beginning: I had to redo it three times. First, I did not like the material. The second attempt showed some severe mistakes I made AND I found out the new material was not suitable for displaying the pattern as it was meant to be (it felt stiff and sort of planky). So I chose a soft alpaca yarn and worked myself through the instruction again - and succeeded after all. The result can be seen above.
Encouraged by this success I knit the "Stripes and Bobbles" scarf which I finished as well. I like the way it looks very much, but for me it was absolutely no fun to knit. But I got through it after all.
The third scarf I chose from the book is "Braides Mischief", and this was really fun to knit for me: quick, easy, and rather mindless. At the moment this is my favorite scarf to wear (if it will become cold, after all, up here it's that warm at the moment that I ask myself why I'm knitting scarves galore).

Since I do not want to flood this blog with pictures in one post, here are the links to my blog (don't worry, it's bilingual):
Stripes and Bobbles
Braided Mischief
Interlocking Balloons

The next project will be the "Colour on Colour" scarf, but it will just take some more time for me to start this (too many WIP's at the moment).

After 8 months, Lady Eleanor is finished

And I couldn't be happier with her. I used 10 skeins of Silk Garden in colorway 84 (9 for knitting, 1 for fringe). I didn't use the fringe in the book, I borrowed the idea for my fringe from Julie on this blog. Anyway, here she is:

The Lady E Bandwagon

Here is my in progress Lady E. I am four skeins in, using Noro Big Kurayon in colorway 17. Knitting this thing is like eating potato chips... I just cannot walk away from it. Thank heavens I will run out of yarn sooner or later.

It has been so inspiring to see all of the different Lady Es out there. Each one is so beautiful!

wandering progress

Here is a progress shot of my wandering aran fields capelet. I started on Nov 18 and have been making steady progress. I've finished the chart and am now working on the button bands. I'm using burgandy cascade 220. This is the first time I've used cascade 220 and I'm really loving the yardage. I like this pattern. The cables hold my interest and now I'm anxious to see how it is when it's all done.
