The Re-Birth of Ruffles

I HIGHLY recommend Lion Brand Microspun for this project!
I am still trying to figure out what to do as far as Color on Color goes. I joined the yahoo group (Color on Colour) and have picked up some good info from there. A lot (most?) people knitting it with the specified yarn are totally unable to get the gauge as specified in the pattern. Plus it's difficult to find the Paternayan Persian yarn not cut into 30 inch lengths, although some people have reported finding it in uncut 8 yard skeins.
I had one skein lying around from an old project and did some experimenting. On size 5 needles (as the pattern calls for), I came nowhere close to gauge. I got 24 stitches to the inch instead of 17. And at that gauge each 30 inch strand allowed me to create between 40 and 45 stitches. That translates into WAY MORE ends than I want to weave in!! So I'm still contemplating what I want to do.

Yet Another Ruffler
Although I haven't been knitting for very long I have not yet tried a project using the yarns suggested. Maybe one day! So...I am doing Ruffles in Cascade 220 Pink, Bright Stripes in some not really bright but nice and pretty Bernat Berella in assorted colors and Turtleneck Shrug in Kartopu Carabelli (My MIL got it from Turkey, it is YUMMY!)
Ruffles took a bit for me to get started right, after starting over about 6 times I finally got it and am so excited about the progress. Bright stripes is moving right along! The Turtleneck Shrug is on holders right now though, I couldn't find 12" #7 circs, I tried DPN's but I just don't like them so I am going to search harder for the circs.
I will try and get some work in progress pics up soon!

Another Backyard Leaves
You can see that I use LOTS of mnemonics when I knit lace! I copied the graph, then highlighted the right side rows (note that the setup row is a "wrong" side row), went over the center line with red, and marked off every five stitches to either side of the center. This really helps me to count as I'm working across a row and has saved me a lot of heartache. I also use a sticky note that I move up every two rows as I am knitting and a stitch counter that I set whenever I get up or put my knitting away (sticky notes slip off and who wants to waste time trying to figure out where she left off?). Finally, I place a stitch marker where indicated by the line on the chart and one just before the edge stitches at either end. Psychologically, it's a boost to me to see those edges coming up!
I have three more repeats before I make the points. It wouldn't suffer with fewer repeats, though. It's plenty long now (there will be, as noted by Felicia, two sections sewn together), but I have enough yarn so I'll stick to the pattern. One thing to note: this is not a fast knit. I have been timing myself and my best section (early in the a.m. with no distraction but the BBC World News) took an hour.

More ruffles
This is my first entry and I just wanted to preface with how wonderful it is to see all these projects coming to life. I love reading everyone trials, tribulations, successes, etc.
I, like so many others, chose Ruffles as my first project from Scarf Style. And I, like so many others are finding it a little slow going. I decided to use some Homespun I had lying around for this project and so, mine is quite wider than the example given in the book. I think it still works, and the colorway is laid out rather nicely too.
I just hope I finish before Christmas! And the way this thing knits up, I can't be sure! Oi!

The Mathematics of Ruffles
I pondered the slowness last night as I knitted and knitted AND knitted and seemingly got nowhere. So I decided to "do the math".
Assuming you are knitting to gauge (8.5 rows per inch) and are making it as long as the pattern specifies (86 inches) you will be knitting 731 short row sections. Yes. 731. Check the pattern. You knit one short row section for every stitch along the spine. Ouch.
You don't even want to know how long the edges are. Lets just say they are way longer than you can even imagine. Over 600 inches. Ouch again.
Now my gauge is 8 stitches to the inch so I "only" have to knit 688 short row sections to get to 86 inches.

Slow to Ruffle
Despite how simple the pattern is, it's *really slow going.* I think an earlier poster made the same comment. Anyone else? I hardly have anything to show for it, despite the fact that I started a few days ago.

Does your yarn ever talk to you?
It is saying "NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!".
That would be the yarn I am trying to use to make Ruffles. It is a lovely varigated blue supersoft merino wool from Interlacements. Since the day I bought it, it has been telling it wants to be a pair of socks and fingerless mitts. I tried to force it to be Ruffles but neither the yarn, nor I, (nor Ruffles for that matter) are happy.
See how unhappy it looks:
And how much better now:
I am now thinking of using some Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool for Ruffles.
Meanwhile the Campus scarf grows REALLY slowly. Not even worth taking a picture.

Received Scarf style in the mail
Progress on the Mom Scarf
And since I can't post this picture in my blog (she reads it), here's detail of the Debbie Bliss chevron scarf I'm making for my mom for Christmas:
When I measured it tonight, I'm at 27" done, and I've still got quite a bit of the first skein of the Encore. I think I'll end up making it 60" or to the end of the second skein, whichever seems best. It's quite wide in worsted weight, maybe 8 or 9 inches.
It doesn't show in the picture, but in the rest of the scarf the color seems to be pooling. The green on the edges and the purples/blues in the middle. In retrospect, I suppose I should have done the 2-rows-from-each-ball trick, but if she says anything, I'll call it a design feature. Wonder what ball #2 will do.

Backyard Leaves Scarf...
The leaves are a lot more textured than I thought they would be... Very three dimensional. I imagine that blocking will soften this up a bit. Anybody block this scarf yet? I don't want to stretch it out until it's no longer springy...

Hi there, a new scarf fan is joining!
Secondly, I'm very happy to join this knit-along since I bought the Scarf Style book a few weeks ago. Each project is great and makes the choice so hard...
So... Misty? Ruffles? Color on Color? The three maybe :) ? I'll let you know very soon!
Kind regards,
Sandra
Vintage Velvet on the needles...
I'm Tara, a relatively new knitter (been knitting just under a year). I love many of the scarves in this book and am currently making the Vintage Velvet in Touch Me #3608, Rose. It's a Christmas gift for my mom. I definitely see a Rose Trellis scarf and maybe even a Color on Color Scarf (even if it is freakin' scary!) in my future. Can't wait to see some of other peoples' projects. Can't figure out how to post the photo of my WIP here, but here's a link to it at least

Another Player Checking In
I'm presently working on Ruffles in a hand dyed merino from Textiles a Manos:
I am finding this a bit tedious to work on and am not sure I'll stick with it.
I'm also working on the Campus scarf in Mission Falls 1824 wool just as the pattern calls for:
I'm usually not a striped scarf kind of person but this one really appeals to me.
The scarf I really want to make is the Color on Color scarf. I may just break down and buy a few colors to start it this weekend. Like I need to start another project.

Hey, Hey, Can I play????
I love everything in this book!!
Currently knitting Ruffles out of a pinky lavender silk from Tess Yarns. It's coming out really cool. Super soft and shiny. And with the short rows and such this pattern goes remarkably fast.
I'm dreaming about Color on Color. Anyone else doing that one?

Tortuga-Neck!
http://goldenneedle.typepad.com
I have to say, Floral Trellis scarf and Interlocking Balloons are intriguing, also - but hey, why would I have bought this book if I didn't like at least a few patterns in it, right?
I am really enjoying everyone's posts, so keep up the great scarf knitting! Yee Haw!

I'm going to do Backyard Leaves too
I ran through the Backyard Leaves chart once - very demanding, but perversely fun (if you like charts). My test yarn was all wrong and I don't have a good substitute in my stash, so I'm waiting to start it next month. I'm traveling to Louisville KY over Thanksgiving (we're visiting my parents) and I have a returned yarn credit at a store there which I plan to use for this pattern.
Let me know if you start and like your yarn choice.

Gearing up to start...
I picked up yarn yesterday to make the Backyard Leaves scarf. I've never followed a chart so intricate before! Anyone else doing this one? I substituted Jaeger Merino for Karabella Aurora 8 because I didn't like the color options for the Aurora. They had a nice olive-y green in the Jaeger, and the yarns appear to be very similar.
And I definitely want to do a Ruffle! I was thinking about doing it in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece - I have a couple of skeins in Candy Apple red.
Looking forward to this!

Vintage Velvet - Finished!
I finished the knitting up last night at Knit Nite, and felted it as soon as I got home. It's still damp though, and will need a day or two to dry. I love it. This one is for The Shop, and I'm doing another in olive green for myself.

I'm New!
I've knit two of the Ruffle Scarf - what fun. I did the first one in a pale pink Cascade 220 (2 skeins) and it turned out great. But, I also had concerns about the bumpy appearance of the wrapped stitches and I'm happy to read on this blog that ssk helps solve the problem. I'm thinking of washing the scarf to see if the yarn will bloom a little and smooth out.
Next I knit the Ruffle in Encore Colorspun Sherbet Print, size 8 needle. I really like this one! The color change occurs after a couple of twists and I think it looks great in this yarn. I got very tired of turning my work all the time so I've figured out how to purl back across the rows without turning my work - I supposed it's really knitting backwards. Here's a picture -maybe.

The Blue Ruffle!!!
I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. I too must stand up and confess that I am a ruffler and proud of it! When I first saw it in the scarf style book I just knew, that I was going to knit it. There are so many great scarfs in that book and I am certainly going to enjoy knitting them up. :) I am already off to get more yarn for the next scarf, (the The Turtleneck Shrug) I so enjoy going to my lys. Yay!!!!
I am knitting the scarf in:
Yarn: Jaeger Matchmaker Merino Double Knitting
Needles: Size US 7 (I did not like the way it came out on size 6 when I first started, so I went up a size)
Reformed Ruffler
I'm loving everyone elses's scarves...this is a great idea for a KAL!

Vintage Velvet
I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself and say hello.
I'm working on the Vintage Velvet scarf from the book. I'm knitting it as a model for the yarn shop I work at part-time. I will also make one for myself when I'm finished with this one. Mine will be olive green. I also want to do the Ruffle (surprise surprise!) but I have my heart set on using Classic Elite: Miracle which is a tencel/alpaca blend. The shop doesn't have it, so I may have to order it, and that means no shop discount! So, I may resort to the tencel/cotton we have at the shop....wah! Anyway, here's a shot of my progress so far on Vintage Velvet.
