finishing first half of backyard leaves...

Ok, in all seriousness, I'm at the end of the first half of my scarf. I finished row 51 with 14 stitches, and row 52 only has 13 stitches!! Anyone? I wanted to finish this half tonight... that's what I get for planning!!

Blocking Ruffle - confessions of a Beginner Babe

Hello, My name is Knottie Knitter....and I don't know how to block....*gasp*....*weep*.

I just bought the Classic Elite Premium for Ruffles, and after reading the pattern, I realized that...I DONT KNOW HOW TO BLOCK!!!

After further investigation (via the knit-ernet) I realized that EVERYONE blocks EVERY project....AAAUUGGHH.....this raises some very important questions:

1. what have I been missing??
2. how the heck do i do this??
3. what does designer kate mean by "light blocking" for ruffles?????

Hi everyone! I just joined up - I'm currently working on Ruffles.
I've never used Cashmerino before - can I just say, "YUM!"?
There are so many scarves I want to make from this book! I didn't think much of Braided Mischief until I saw The Fearless Knitter's version in Noro - now I have to make it! I may or may not have just ordered the Peternayan Persian yarn for Color on Color - but got one of those 'time-out' errors right when I clicked SEND ORDER - so I don't know yet if it went through. Doncha hate that?
Midwest Moonlight and Blizzard are the next 2 I'd like to do.

Problem with Vintage Velvet :(

The problem, I have this amazing yarn that I purchased on ebay. I only have three skeins, so a scarf really is my only option at this point to what to do with it. And with as cold as it has been in Ohio, the warmth of a wool scarf is really attractive.

So, I started Vintage Velvet from the scarf book. I had to highly reduce the width since there is no way I have enough yarn. There is only 75 yards on a
skein.

The problem is I don't think after knitting skein one, that it really works I am afraid to say. I love the pattern and I love the yarn, but I think it istime to frog again. What do you think?

thanks to everyone who posted some much needed sage advice. I ended up going to a LYS. If anyone's in Denver metro area here, I have to suggest going to Recycled Lamb. Very helpful ladies there, even if you don't buy anything. I value customer service, so this store will be getting a lot of word of mouth business from me, as well as my continued patronage.

oh. back to the point. here's the progress on my backyard leaves.

I also got a yarn shipment in today, which included the Reynolds Blizzard in light blue (#612), for crocheting the blizzard shawl.

Sue: Why don't you overdye the whole scarf? Make it a slightly darker green and the two dyelots should blend together nicely.

Suzie: what yarn did you use? I am on a real Feather and Fan kick right now after having finished the Seascape Shawl from FiberTrends which has a F & F border. I may have to put Misty Garden on my to-do list.

My two dye-lot Back Yard Leaves scarf. See my previous posting below.

I finished my first scarf from the book: Backyard Leaves. I love the pattern but I'm very disappointed in my scarf. Please listen to my saga... I guess I'm looking for consolation.
Since the scarf pattern looked to be a fair amount of concentration and time I decided to splurge and purchase a more expensive yarn for it. I bought 250 yards of cashmere on Ebay for $40 plus shipping. Although this was one Ebay item, the yarn came wound in two 125 yard balls. The Ebay seller was someone who hand dyes/hand paints yarn. The yarn looked fine to me so I started the first scarf-half. I finished my first ball with about 4 more inches to knit on the scarf-half so I started using the second ball and noticed a slight color difference - like a different dye lot. I thought to myself I really didn't like a different dye lot sold to me in one Ebay purchase but the colors are very close and only a knitter who is scrutinizing this scarf closely will ever notice the change so I kept on knitting and finished the half.
Now the yarn was shipped to me without any gauge or washing instructions so I e-mailed the Ebay seller and asked about washing. The seller responded that I could hand wash with mild shampoo, rinse with hair conditioner or dry clean.
I noticed that as I was knitting this scarf-half that some of the dye was coming off the yarn and on to my hands so I started to suspect this yarn wasn't very color fast. I didn't want to block the scarf-half , spray it with water and have green dye run all over my ironing board so I decided to hand wash the scarf half with cold water and Woolite, rinse it out, dry it flat until barely damp and then block it. This is where my problem with the yarn really showed up. The last part of the scarf- half that was knitted with the second ball changed color from the washing much more than the rest of the scarf-half. Now I have a scarf-half that looks like I knit it from two different shades of yarn. The color change between the parts of the scarf is impossible not to notice. The second scarf-half has the same problem.
So has this ever happened to you before? Does hand painted yarn always handle hand washing differently from skein to skein? Should I have never hand washed a hand-dyed/painted yarn?
Next time I ever purchase yarn from EBay I will scrutinize each ball . If there are any differences in color (like a dye lot change) I will seriously consider sending it back. But meanwhile I have a scarf that represents time and money but looks terrible.
I am using Bloggerbot to post this which doesn't seem to have a way to post a picture so I'm going to post this text and then try to use Hello to post a photo of my poor scarf.

I had to put this aside for the holidays, but I'm so glad to have finished it! I really love it. Now, what to tackle next? Midwest Moonlight (Carole, yours looks beautiful!) or Backyard Leaves?

Hello everyone! I am a relatively new knitter (learned less than a year ago). I gravitate towards scarves b/c of the instant (almost) gratification. I love choosing a pattern, some yummy yarn, and seeing what the combination creates. Intro to my scarfstyle experience and the backyard leaves scarf.

My first attempt at chart knitting. Probably not the best idea I've ever had, but it seemed to work out fine (after five starts and rips). I am up to my sixth repeat of the pattern, but made the HUGE mistake of knitting and chatting simultaneously. Uh. Then, I tried TINKing. Uh-Oh.
Now I'm stuck. I want to try frogging, but am SO scared to rip a few rows out b/c I'm not sure I'll be able to put it back on the needles the way it should go... any advice? I was thinking to take it to a friendly LYS for help...

Hey, glad to have found this KAL! What a lot of Ruffles there are! ;)
I'm working on Midwest Moonlight, which I'm knitting with Rowan Wool Cotton in a discontinued color, "tulip". It's my first attempt at anything even close to lacework, and I'm finding it much easier than I expected. It's such a beautiful pattern, I love how it's coming out!

i finally have a scarf to show you ... i can't believe you people who've said ruffles was a quick knit! i am so impressed by you - this has got to be the longest i've ever taken to knit a scarf! in the end, i gave up after only two balls of yarn and 100cm of ruffles (as opposed to the 218.5cm as instructed in the pattern).



i like my scarves shorter anyway ... and it's still wearable, so i'm happy! plus i finished it before the scarf-wearing season is over, which i probably wouldn't if i were to make it longer ...

Scarf Style is about crochet, too!

Are any of you working on (or planning to work on) one of the crocheted scarves in Scarf Style?

I ask out of curiosity (this may be a KNIT-along, but we still readily embrace our one-needled cousin), and also because a publicist from Interweave contacted me about the possibility of some such crocheting Scarf Style-r to appear on a new DIY show.

As a limelight-loving Leo, it sure makes me wish I'd already started the flower trellis scarf. :)

Yet another Ruffles

I just joined up -- I just plain love this book. I'm about a third of the way through my Ruffles scarf, knit in Dreambaby DK microfiber. Not so expensive and super soft.

I can't wait to try some of the other scarves I've seen in this knit along!

Still Leafing Along

I'm still chugging along on Backyard Leaves. I've completed nine repeats on the first half so far. Here's a photo after six repeats.

It's very hard for me to work on this and chat with my friends at the same time. I'm getting better but in the last few days I had a rip a few times too.

A new scarf-addict from France

My name is Sophie La Sof , I live in Paris. I'm knitting Ruffles thanks to another french Sophie which tell me the pattern is not difficult, thank you Sophie, you were right!



I started with the yellow acrylic phildar yarn (3,5 french size needles), then i wanted to try with two colors and couldn't wait for the first ruffles to be finished. For the red and black one, I use Phildar also, sportlaine (4,5 needles). I want to effer it to a good friend and must finish it quick! It's fun to knit this scarf, and so easy that i can even knit inside the metro.

Searching the knit-along site

Annie Modesitt e-mailed me this morning to let me know that she loves the knit-along and how satisfying it is for designers to see people knitting up their designs. She reminded me of one thing I don't like about Blogger: the inability to categorize posts. Wouldn't it be handy to click a link and see everything about Backyard Leaves on one page?

Unfortunately, I can't manipulate this blog to do that, but I can tell you all about the search bar at the top of the page. I've never tried it until tonight, after I got another search up and running. Sure enough, it turns out that the search box in the top left will search this site only. Want to see all the Ruffles? Or see who used Cascade 220? Plug it in and let the wonder of technology do the work for you.

(As for my own Scarf Style knitting, it's nonexistent right now, although I'm trying to convince myself - or not convince myself - that I deserve Vintage Velvet knit in Touch Me.)

118 Ruffle Goodness

Well Ruffles, Ruffles and more Ruffles is done. The final measurement is around 118inches of ruffled goodness. It has been done for awhile, but I was trying to wait for
some real light to get an accurate colour photo.

I was really happy at how the colours turned out with the stripes. I was worriedthe hole time that I would run out of yarn, but at 118 inches I don't thinkI need that extra skein. My husband has decided that it really feels and lookslike a sea cucumber. He keeps grabbing the ends and squeezing. He claim it always makes him hungry. On the flip side a lot of people have commented with the colours it looks like intestines. Either way I as so happy with the way it has turnedout. My first completed project with my knit buddy, MeowGirl.

I have just started on the vintage velvet scarf from the book. Though I have
run into a lot of problems with the yarn I chose and the gauge being to big.
I will post more when I am happy with the scarf.

I ended up doing a larger version of Ruffles using Homespun. I like the results alot.

Hello from Czech Republic.
Unlike many of you I decided NOT to start with Ruffles (although I was tempted :-) and went for Lady Eleanor Entrelac Stole.

It looks rather different from the original since I used totally different yarn (in color, quality and gauge) but I really like it anyway.

A new sign up and another ruffle

It truly is a wonder how many wonderful ruffle scarves are being knitted right now. Meow Girl and I started the scarf on Christmas Eve. She was looking for something to keep her fingers busy and what better then a scarf project. Then she was nice enough to teach me how to do short rows. So I have now taken over the project to finish. Our first joint knit buddies project. It is so nice to have friends to work on projectstogether.

I am using some very old Cleo Egyptian Cotton by Plymouth. It has been in mystash bag for 11 years. Time it get used for a good cause.

Reminder: the purpose of this knit-along

This knit along is for scarves knit from the book (or inspired by the book) Scarf Style. Talk about other scarves is okay if you're also posting about your Scarf Style scarf/scarves. There are other knit-alongs for other scarves (i.e., Clapotis). This isn't to be mean or overly restrictive, but more so that when people read this blog, they know what we're talking about. If we start discussing all sorts of other patterns not in the book, it will create confusion.
